This video shows the steps for playing dreidel. Use this template as a starting point for your own Hanukkah-themed video, or update the scenes and swap out the dreidel assets for something else entirely. This video starts out by explaining the game of dreidel and moves into the steps. You can try doing the same in your explanatory videos.
Video Transcription: How to Play Dreidel | Hanukkah Explainer
Dreidel is a fun game of chance to play with family and friends during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. To play, you need a dreidel, at least two or more players, and coins, candy, or any other kind of tokens for betting. Divide the tokens evenly amongst the players. 10 each is a good starting point. Each player gets one token to begin the game. Then players take turns spinning the dreidel.
Each of the Hebrew letter on the dreidel represents an action for players to take on their spin.
- If the dreidel lands on Nun, you do nothing.
- Landing on Hei means you win half of the pot. If there are an odd number of tokens, round up one.
- If the dreidel lands on Shin, you have to add one additional token into the pot.
- Landing on Gimmel means you win everything. Take all of the tokens in the pot.
Whenever the pot is emptied or reduced to one token, everyone adds an additional token to the pot. After every player has had one spin, everyone adds another token to the pot to commence another round of spinning. A player is out when they have no more tokens to bet and the game is over when one player has all of the tokens. And that's how to play dreidel.
